Mary grew up in Ohio as the daughter of a civil servant who wrote aircraft safety regulations. Her father stressed that education and public service were the keys to a good life. She graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and a Master’s Degree in 1976. She worked as a speech pathologist in Chicago and Anchorage, then returned to law school at Willamette University College of Law. She received her law degree in 1984 and was recognized in Who’s Who in American College Law Students.

Professional Experience

Mary is a member of the Oregon State Bar, the Washington State Bar, the US District Court for the District of Oregon, the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, and the US Supreme Court. Mary also participates in the Real Estate & Land Use, Family Law, and Administrative Law Sections of the Oregon State Bar, and the Oregon Academy of Family Law Practitioners.

As a lawyer in Oregon, Mary worked in the General Counsel’s Office of the Oregon Department of Justice, then in the Litigation and Real Estate Departments of Stoel Rives, and then for Oregon Senator Ken Baker, before establishing her general civil practice in Oregon City in 1992. She handles transactional, trial, appellate and administrative hearing matters, and has served as a court-annexed arbitrator since 1994. She has served on the Oregon City Planning Commission regularly volunteers doing intake for St. Andrew Legal Clinic. Mary employs her governmental and big firm experience to deliver highly skilled and personalized attention to her clients.

Mary has been a frequent writer and speaker on a wide range of subjects, including easements, financial elder abuse, neighbor law, civil procedure, and evidentiary standards. She established legal standards for willful child neglect and relevancy of evidence in Campuzano v. Peck, 175 Or App 292 (2001) and for de novo review and rebuttal of presumptions in Lawrence v. Clackamas County, 164 Or App 462 (1999).


Mary is married to the love of her life, Douglas Johnson, and they make their home in Clackamas County near Estacada, Oregon. They are the parents of four children and grandparents of two grandsons. Mary enjoys gardening, cooking and needlework.
